The Siuna Foundation is a non-profit organization formed by Martha's Vineyard resident Muriel Laverty, a registered nurse, who now lives full time in Masaya, Nicaragua with her husband, Omar Gonzalez Espinoza. Muriel found the contrast too difficult, to have one foot on Martha’s Vineyard and one foot in Nicaragua, and by living in Nicaragua, it is now easier to personally monitor each project. Every donor for specific projects is given photos of how their gift was spent. All donors and potential donors are welcome to come see our foundation’s projects any time they want. We are very proud of what we have accomplished. For details, email us.
A recent addition to our list of projects is our assistance to three children’s baseball teams in Masaya, made up mostly of poor children from the streets and barrios of Masaya. These children now have new uniforms, equipment from the Martha’s Vineyard Little League, and have traveled to compete in El Salvador, Cuba, Venezuela and Panama. From our children, we have four golden glove award winners.
One of the three teams is called BOSTON, as a thank you to the residents and contributors of Massachusetts. Each child has dreams of making the big leagues, and we tell them over and over that education is the key. Education and abstinence from alcohol and smoking and drugs. So far, so good!
